Life during a renovation

By Eric Battey, Project Manager

You may have heard horror stories or know of someone who had a bad experience during a home remodel or upgrade.

While it is a reality that life will not be “routine” by any stretch of the imagination, there are some proactive steps that can be instrumental in making the experience less eventful or perhaps less stressful.

Develop realistic project goals

These should be in line with your overall budget.

Identify the limitations of your existing building. If you have owned your home for an extended period, you may already be aware of some of the issues. If this isn’t the case or you don’t know what to look for, consider the services of a knowledgeable and qualified professional. Home Improvement Coaching is a service Team Engineering offers for just this purpose.

Also, reach out to your local building officials early in the process to identify any restrictions or changes to code requirements.

Develop accurate plans.

This can start with visual conceptual designs.  Once you have confidence in your layout, the concept plans should be converted to construction drawings. These will help assure the various contractors are “on the same page” and avoid costly revisions.

Keep timelines flexible. Inevitably there will be delays due to supply availability or contractor schedules. This year was an extreme example of such conditions.

These are but a few of the challenges associated with any renovation project. But don’t despair, the end result will be worth it!
