Engineer-In-Training (EIT) Certification

By Administrator

On the path to becoming a licensed Professional Engineer (PE), most people must first obtain their Engineer-in-Training (EIT) Certification.

We are happy to report that Team Engineering has 2 new EITs in the office, Olivia Caron and Jeff Trovato!

The EIT certification is a step along the way to an engineering licensure—it signifies that someone has successfully demonstrated competence in the fundamentals of engineering in their particular field. In other words, the aspiring engineer must first pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam before moving forward onto the Professional Engineer (PE) Exam.

The FE exam is a 6-hour standardized test with a range of topics depending on the field of engineering. Both Olivia and Jeff passed the civil engineering FE exam after studying for a few months. There are 6 other disciplines to choose from based on one’s industry. For example: mechanical, electrical, environmental, etc.

An EIT does not have any legal privileges nor the ability to officially stamp an engineered design, report, solution, analysis, etc. The EIT designation is really a way for an aspiring engineer to show their peers that they have passed the FE exam, have a general understanding of engineering fundamentals, and to show initiative in obtaining the PE license.

Every state has different requirements. To become a PE in New Hampshire the most common path is to:

  • pass the FE exam,
  • acquire a total 4 years of experience working under other Professional Engineers,
  • demonstrate increasing responsibility and competence in your field by submitting a portfolio of work to the Board of Professional Engineers,
  • and pass the PE exam which is more difficult and more specialized than the FE exam.
