Construction Mockups
By Brian Ki, P.E.
In our opinion, successful projects are built on careful planning and effective communication. A powerful in successful projects is construction mockups. Think of a mockup a prototype of a project detail. Mockups provide owners, designers, and builders with a tangible representation of the final product without costly change orders or uncertain commitments.
Owners benefit from mockups by gaining a clear understanding of the project’s design, layout, and scale—allowing them to visualize the result. This helps owners make informed decisions, provide feedback, and ensure that their vision is accurately translated into the final construction, ultimately leading to increased satisfaction. Mockups can be as simple as a trim detail and what color to paint it with.
Designers (architects, engineers, etc.) benefit from mockups as they facilitate valuable design feedback, which helps optimize the design before construction begins. This helps us understand what looks good on the computer does not always translate to a buildable feature in the field.
Builders benefit from mockups by improving fabrication and assembly techniques and processes. Mockups allow builders to identify design issues and test products before committing to a particular detail or product. Builders also use mockups to train workers without risking mistakes on the actual building—this idea can apply to developing safe construction practices.
Mockups are powerful tools that bridge the gap between imagination and reality in the construction industry. By providing a tangible representation of the final project, they facilitate effective communication, enhance decision-making, and improve collaboration among stakeholders. The benefits of construction mockups extend beyond visualization, encompassing risk mitigation, design validation, and client satisfaction.
This blog was inspired by the mockups we observed during a framing inspection at a project currently in construction. This lake Winnipesaukee new construction home was designed by Bonin Architects and is being built by North Branch Construction.
