Exterior Steel Coatings
By Brian Ki, P.E.
We all know that steel can rust and corrode. This type of deterioration can easily lead to structural failures and create more problems than not. There are a variety of ways to help prevent this. This picture shows an exterior bolt connecting a steel structure in Boston, MA. To help prevent rust and corrosion, contractors typically have the steel hot-dip galvanized, provide a rust-inhibiting primer, and/or apply a corrosion-resistant coated paint to the exterior surface. Don’t underestimate this minor coating of primer or paint that can extend the life of the steel material and create longevity in the overall structure.
