Reasons for Residential Sprinklers

Posted on September 17 , 2019 by admin0 Comments

Residential sprinkler systems have become more and more relevant to the point that some towns are requiring them in new residential buildings. Although these systems tend to add additional costs to any construction project, they add a level of safety that everyone can appreciate. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) sprinklers have produced the following advantages when compared to homes without them:

  • 81% lower civilian death rate in residential homes
  • Average firefighter injury rate was nearly 80% lower
  • The home fire death rate was 90% lower when fire sprinklers and hardwire smoke alarms were both present

The purpose of a home sprinkler system is to create a longer time frame for people to exit during an active fire. This, however, is not to be confused that the sprinkler system is designed to put the fire out.
If you are moving to an apartment or condominium, make sure all common areas and individual apartments are sprinkled as usually required by the International Building Code. If in a new home or remodeling an existing, check with the local authority having jurisdiction for their specific requirements.
