Double Post Base Solution

We recently performed structural design for the renovation of a historic building to be used as apartments. Floor space was at a premium, and 2×4 bearing walls were used in the lower level adjacent to a foundation wall. We needed a post that would fit inside the 2×4 wall, so we elected for a 5-ply 2×4 post to support the beam above for the base connection to the foundation. Two Simpson Strong Tie ABU44Z post bases side-by-side provided just the width we needed. The standoff-style base keeps the kiln-dried posts off the moisture-wicking concrete and were post-installed into the footing once the posts were located by the framer.
